Global agribusinesses, VC investors and technology start-ups from around the world came together for two days of networking and debate at the fifth World Agri-Tech Innovation Summit in London. (17-18 October), hosted by Rethink Events.
Growing demand for food, coupled with declining soil health, extreme weather events and tighter environmental regulations, is putting the farming industry under pressure to innovate.
Over 300 international delegates attended the summit to discover how exciting new breakthroughs and innovations in agricultural technology can help solve these challenges, with speakers including Hans Johr of Nestlé, Adrian Percy of Bayer CropScience, Vipula Shukla of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and George Eustice, DEFRA Minister.
Discussion focused on the most innovative trends, including gene editing and nutrition, AI & machine learning, blockchain and IoT, soil health, and the microbiome.
Jennie Moss, Founder of Rethink Events, said: “We’ve been organising this summit for five consecutive years and it has been fascinating seeing the acceleration of agricultural technology from the lab to the field.
“Our summit brings the whole industry together revealing brand new objectives for the industry and helping companies forge the right partnerships to take these solutions to market.”
A new element to the summit this year was the World Agri-Tech Demo Day. Ten early stage, pre-revenue companies pitched their solutions to a panel of investors and industry representatives.
Alvan Hunt, CEO and co-founder of Hexafly won the ‘Best Newcomer’ Demo Day award.
He said: “I am absolutely thrilled to have won this accolade and it feels incredible to be recognised by the leading figures in this industry.
“I have a dedicated team who are extremely passionate about insect farming, aquaculture, chitin and plant nutrition and we want to deliver a better approach to feeding the planet. Hexafly has a number of exciting innovative projects in the pipeline and we are looking forward to unveiling this in the agricultural sector.”
Brendan Moroso, Strategic Partnerships Guru of Cgiar Platform, commented: “There is huge value in the conversations that this summit facilitates, not only in terms of knowledge transfer and shaping the state-of-the-industry, but as a space for peering over the horizon at challenges and opportunities that await on the other side.”
